Soak that in. Just back from the framer. I found the poster at the Rose Bowl Flea Market and nearly plotzed. It’s so beautiful. I actually owned an Ami6 once that I pulled out of the desert.

Kinja'd!!!

It hadn’t been started in 20 years and fired right up with a carb cleaning and some fuel. It also looked like a family of goats had used the hood as a trampoline, but it was rust free. Unfortunately, the frame was cracked and I had other projects and not much room, so I didn’t keep it too long. But, I rescued it, and I’ll find another some day. And, the poster is pretty much life sized.

What a strange poster. Would this be something that would have been in a dealership?

I’m not sure, actually. It’s not like other dealership posters I’ve seen, but that could just be because it’s French. It appears to be part of a series.

Lovely! This is the kind of thing I want to see adorning my living room when I get my own place! French and Italian rides, especially! :)

I’ve always loved the Ami...I imagine getting the frame repaired on the one you rescued would’ve been quite the affair though... :(

GIS brings up two, this one and the overhead view one. And, it looks like they did something similar for the Ami 8.

That one’s in my bedroom. Love French cars.

The guy I sold the car to did fix it and he said it wasn’t all that bad. I don’t quite have the skills for that type of thing, so I’m glad it went to someone who does.

Life sized? How big is it? Looks great. It’s from Robert Delpire’s advertising agency, Delpire Publicité. Delpire had clients that included Citroën. He produced sales brochures and posters for Citroën, using the work of famous photographers like Helmut Newton and Sarah Moon. Not sure who shot this one.

So it probably was meant to be in a dealership. But these go for great bucks over here (way over 100 euros), what did you pay?

Glad to hear it! I’ve always thought the mi was underated by a lot of people. Yes, essentially a 2CV underneath, but fairly stylish for the time, and that just made them more reliable! :)

This one does have a Helmut Newton vibe with the black and white and simple boldness of it. No gorgeous naked people, though. Sarah Moon’s work was much dreamier. But, also sometimes had naked folks although her models didn’t look like they could kill you. It does say Delpire Publicité, but I didn’t know much about them. Very interesting. I’ll have to do a little research. Citroën marketing from that era is the best. I wasn’t sure if it was dealership or just for advertising, but a dealership poster makes the most sense. It’s just not the normal size I see those. I was just joking about the life-sized thing. It’s about the size of a movie poster. 29"x42" roundabouts. They were asking $100 for it, but I talked them down to 75, so I guess I got a deal.

Newton was the first I was thinking about. Can’t remember if these were in the Berlin Helmut Newton Museum. Probably not because I would not have forgotten that ;-)

$75 is a great deal, check these auction results on the one viewed from above. But... You did buy this to enjoy yourself so why would we care. It’s awesome!

When I was in college, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston had a big Helmut Newton retrospective, but there were no Citroëns there, either. Lots of nudes, though. It was like Dutch cinema in there.

I saw there was one of these on Ebay recently for $175, so I guess the guy I got it from didn’t know what he had. Or, he figured Americans wouldn’t be as interested. It looks great on the wall. I have it above my couch and I see it as I walk in the door. Really sharp. Maybe I’ll come across its companion one day for over the t.v. But, I’m not paying 200 bucks.

Kinja'd!!!1

That’s why I’m a bit in doubt about the Citroën’s poster is from Helmut. No nudity. Classy or otherwise. The man is a true artist, my favorite photographer probably. Maybe I should try an LaLD-post in Newton’s style. I need more Barbies.

Kinja'd!!!

My living room will never have such a great thing above the couch or TV. Maybe a picture of our beloved Queen and King...

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris

Kinja'd!!!1

Haha. A Helmut Newton LaLD post would be epic. Josje isn’t into Barbies, yet? I’ve always been a big admirer of his as well. And Sarah Moon, actually. She’s not as well known here, though. If I had to pick a favorite photographer it might be Robert Frank, who is probably the biggest American name outside of Ansel Adams. He invented street photography. Good stuff.

How about a picture of them in the DAF Kini? That should satisfy everyone.

Kinja'd!!!1

Well he did some shoots for the Pirelli Calendar, maybe I can get some input from there. It could be a Teutonic Tuesday with whatever car is on display with the Helmut Newton angle. Just don’t think a lot of LaLD-readers will actually know him ;-)

Robert Frank, the poet amongst photographers. And then Ansel Adams: Is it coincidence these all mainly shot in B/W? Well, for Frank and Adams probably not due to their period of birth...

I’m not sure if these are there with our current king/queen. It probably would B&W as well:

I bet some folks know who he is, or at least would recognize his work. It’s a more eclectic group around here than they get credit for.

For a long time, I guess, color wasn’t considered artistic enough. It was for snapshots. It wasn’t until the 70's really, with guys like William Eggleston that color got respect as fine art.

Kinja'd!!!

Why isn’t every generation of the royal family photographed in that car? It should be required. Come to think of it, they should also be required to drive it as a point of Dutch pride.

I should really do a B&W shoot anyway.

That’s a good point. As the B&W picture above is of our former queen and husband (then still princess) it can still be done. Would be an excellent promotional stunt for the museum!

A b&w shoot is a good idea. I haven’t seen a noir post. You’d have to pick the right car.

Get on the horn and tell someone over there. They can recreate one of these shots. It would be great. For some reason I just noticed the little roof canopy. It’s adorable. I was so focused on the gorgeous bodywork.

Some shots this week’s French Friday have somewhat less colour to give it a somewhat authentic feel. You’ll totally love the subject. It’s odd.

I contacted Rob Kieft, conservator at the museum. Added it’s the 60th birthday of the Kini this year and it could be a nice publicity-stunt for the museum. Let’s see if they can gather all parties necessary. I can imagine our king having a full schedule.

Oh, great. Kings are probably pretty busy, but it shouldn’t take long and they’ve got the whole year to do it. It’s for Dutch pride, man. I imagine there’s a diecast out there. You should do your own tribute. Or, have you already done a Kini post? Still, it is the 60th anniversary and that car can’t get enough love.

The remake was utter garbage. It’s kind of hard to do a show about a talking car these days, I think. It was perfectly 80's.

Haha. My mother had a talking Nissan Maxima. I always liked how it said “thank you” when you fastened your seat belt.

Americans didn’t really know what good handling was at that time. Flopping all over the place was what they expected. It is a pretty car. James Garner, the star, did most of his own driving, and he really knew how to get a lot out of that thing. Some great car chases on that show.

That’s too bad. It’s on U.S. Netflix. When I need a good dose of 70's nostalgia, I put one on. I guess they figure you Dutchies have never heard of Jim Rockford. Here’s a good compilation of Firebird action. That J-turn where he reverses and spins the car around is also called a Rockford Turn. His signature move.

Yeah, that’s how I think of a fish wife. Loud and strong. Not necessarily bad looking. A battle axe is a little older and homely, but also brawny. We still have fish markets. Wow, that is pretty crazy. But, it doesn’t get much fresher. They have live fish in tanks in many seafood restaurants, but they don’t bludgeon it to death while you witness at least in my experience. If they did that with cows or pigs, a lot of people might become vegetarian. Not everyone, of course, but a bunch.

My usual image of a large gathering of Italians is a lot of yelling, but maybe that’s more common among the ones that live in New Jersey.

And that time I went on a trawler to experience real fishing. That was Fresh as hell as well. Out of the net, cutting it’s throat and into the smoking chamber. Eating in about an hour after getting those nets in. Awesome experience. Fish don’t have fur. No harm done here ;-)

Hahaha, often it is, especially on the road. And in New Jersey. Just not when it comes to food. Well, maybe if there’s need to be paid.

Where were you on that trawler? That does sound wonderful. My late brother was a big fisherman, as I probably mentioned. I went deep sea fishing with him a couple times and we would take the fish off the hook and cook it almost immediately. Well, he caught most of the fish, but it sure was delicious. I did catch a blue marlin once, but you don’t eat those.

In New Jersey, if there’s a need to be paid, they skip the yelling and just start breaking kneecaps.

On the North sea near the Wadden Islands. Or do you mean my position on that trawler physically? At the captain’s table of course ;-)

A MARLIN? That must have been wicked. Such brute force in an animal. Epic.

The Italians in NJ do or just everyone?

Ha. Of course. The whole time you spent at the captain’s table? How’d he compare to Stubing? The North Sea sounds pretty thrilling. What brought you there?

Yeah, it was exhausting reeling in that marlin. I think it took an hour or an hour and a half. I did it all myself, too. When it was over I literally couldn’t lift my arm. The fish weighed more than I did.

Just the Italians, really, but there are a lot of Italians. Some of the Jews can be pretty tough, too, but not like the Italians. Did I ever tell you about how my parents had an accountant that was connected to the Mafia?

Well, Herr Rotgans would not leave my side, wanted to hear all the awesome sailing stories I had to tell. Usually he ended up with a bunch of dentists and accountants he had to tell what to do, now he had someone who told him what the weather would be like and what heading was needed to be put in the nav. It was some incentive a bunch of physiotherapists got, a friend of mine (physiotherapist, the guy I went to Thailand with) asked me to join. Of course I did.

FOOTAGE!!! THERE HAS TO BE FOOTAGE OF THAT EPIC REELING IN!

We have some Israely people in the hotel over here. I asked them if they knew you. They didn’t.

That’s awesome. Had he never had any Dutchies on board before? What else did you guys do? Did you help pull the nets in, or something? Or were you just along for the ride?

No, no footage. This was years ago when I was a teenager and we took a big family vacation to Hawaii. My brother, father, and I went deep sea fishing. That was the only hit we got all day much to my brother’s disappointment. He was a big fishing fan. There are some pictures of my triumph at my parents’ house. And I got a fiberglass reproduction of my marlin.

I haven’t been to Israel in a long time, but I’m surprised the Eisen name didn’t hold some kind of sway with them. Maybe they were playing coy. Or Goy.

Nope, I’m sure we were not his first Dutch “crew”. We helped with all kinds of stuff, even removing the heads before smoking the fish. True masculine day!

A FIBERGLASS REPRODUCTION? Where’s that one, at your parent’s as well?

I have never been to Israël. Not sure if I ever will. I do love the Israëli women!

Yeah, that is very macho. Did you get to eat the smoked fish? My people love smoked fish.

It is at my parents’ house. But, it needs restoration because my old cat chewed the tail off when we had it stored in the basement. I guess he thought it was a real fish.

Some amazing women over there. I was too young to appreciate them when I was there, but they get around. We have a little Israeli community here in L.A. and I meet up with some of them occasionally to ogle the women.

Yes, of course! I speared the fish and hang ‘m in the smoking chamber myself. Best fish ever.

Restoration? Can’t help you on parts for that one! It must look real...

They’re kinda dangerous, right? With the years of military service they need to attend.

You don’t have a source for replacement replica Pacific blue marlin tails? I’m disappointed. You’ve always come through for me before.

If they’re not serious about being a soldier, that military service can be like summer camp. It doesn’t always toughen them up that much. They kind of put you where you’ll do best. One of my friends made movies and another learned how to cook.

I’m a wildlife man. Only true nature counts. I can get you a stuffed Marlin!

Haha, made movies??? Any of those online?

I need one the same size as my marlin. With fish, they don’t really “stuff” them. They make them out of fiberglass and they’ll just use parts of the head and jaw. I think they used the actual spear part on mine.

I bet something is online. They were anything from propaganda stuff to how to take apart your Uzi.

And there are actually companies making these in prefab fiberglass? Awesome!

Then just share his youtube-channel!

They’re supposed to take the measurements of the fish you caught and make a pretty accurate reproduction. I bet they do have a bunch of different sizes pre-made.

I’ll ask her if she has a Youtube channel. Maybe there’s an Israeli Army channel. She made an interesting short film starring Malcolm McDowell for her thesis when we were in grad school together.

Ach so. The stuff you can earn a living with...

Not sure if I’m “allowed” to watch that as all security agencies are probably monitoring on full alert right now. It could hurt the feelings of our Islam community.

And there he is again: Malcolm McD! Should have played the part of Ed Straker.

Oh, great. More people monitoring our communiqués.

You’re obsessed with Ed Straker now, aren’t you? Malcolm would have been great on that show. As an alien, or Earthling. I’ve actually been on a Mission: Impossible binge lately. I love that Peter Graves.

Obsessed isn’t the right word for the feelings I’ve got regarding Ed Straker. That privilege is solely for my beloved princess Oxenberg.

Mission: Impossible . Awesome. On Netflix as well I suppose? We only have the 3rd movie.

Well, you sure seemed impressed by Ed. You keep bringing him up. I think he’s your new princess.

The old t.v. show, actually. A friend loaned me some dvd’s. It’s so entertaining. But, I do love the movies. The last one was fantastic. I feel like they’ve come up before. They’re better Bond movies than the Bond movies these days.

Impressed: certainly. Who wouldn’t be by someone driving such a car and wearing those shirts / jackets with these awesome collars. He’s no prince though, that part is just for Casper. Thanks to mrs. Oxenberg.

Yes, I was afraid that would be it. That’s been a while, always loved that series. And agreed on the Bond argument. Totally.
